Experiential Learning

One of the many goals of education is to prepare students to be college, career, and community ready. By narrowing the gap between theory and practice, Experiential Learning (ExpL) creates meaning for students. ExpL provides opportunities for students to learn a variety of skills through rigorous academic and technical preparation with hands-on, authentic experiences.

Students seek clear connections between their current class work and their future academic and career plans. ExpL activities are about awareness, exploration, preparation and training through relevant, real-life experiences. Students gain insight into what skills are needed, how knowledge learned in school is put into action in the workplace, and develops a student's understanding of many post secondary and career options and pathways in a particular field.

The MMSD Experiential Learning Continuum

MMSD coordinates the following options for students through Central Office

Middle School

  • FutureQuest - November 29, 2023
    7th Grade Career Exploration in Partnership with the Dane County School Consortium held at the Alliant Energy Center

  • 8th Grade Career Exploration Day - November 2023 - January 2024
    Held at all 12 MMSD Middle Schools on various days

High School

  • Work-Based Learning Credit and Employability Skills
    Earn MMSD Elective Credit (Up to 5 Credits) for PAID or UNPAID/VOLUNTEER work

  • Internships
    Typically during the summer, 90 hours of paid work in an industry that the student is interested in pursuing post-high school

  • Youth Apprenticeship - Juniors and/or Seniors Only
    Students work in one of 11 industries for up to 2 years in one of 11 different industry areas while taking related coursework at school. Sophomores may apply to start the program their Junior year.
